Attractive men and attractive women share some of the same basic facial features. For instance, facial symmetry and balance is valued across societies. By and large, though, there are notable differences between those features that are considered “coveted” by men versus those features women may yearn to restore or recreate with cosmetic procedures and products.
For this reason it’s important to select a dermatologist that really “gets it.” Just as you wouldn’t try to fit a younger or very petite individual in products or attire designed for an adult or someone who patronizes a big and tall shop, you can’t automatically identify a product, technique or approach to a procedure that works for a woman as the right answer to a man’s concerns.
Basically, the attractive male face departs from the attractive female face due to the following distinctions:
- Prominent brow ridges
- Deep-set eyes
- More flat, narrow brows
- Narrower eyes
- Slightly-closed lids
- Somewhat longer, wider nose
- Thinner lips
- Square or angled jaws
- Heavier, larger jawline
Generally, coveted female features are more delicate. Basically, you can take each one of the features above and deem the exact opposite a “beautiful” attribute — for a woman.
As men age, those strong, chiseled features may start to move south. The prominent, defined jawline may look less so as cheeks start to sag. Your profile may change as the nose becomes bulbous and appears elongated. Those deep-set eyes may appear different, as tissue around and on the lids start slides downward. Then, of course, there is the issue of lines and wrinkles.
Dr. Gerald Bock might administer dermal fillers to restore the look of the jawline, or the brow ridge. And even though wrinkles and lines are not limited to one gender, we understand even those treatments to correct these age-related concerns are different for women. Men, for instance, generally have thicker skin. As such, though the same laser energy might be used to smooth those lines, Dr. Bock might pass the laser over targeted areas on a man more than he would on a woman due to the thickness of the tissue.
Further, because men tend to have less subcutaneous fat than women, as they age shallow and hollow areas and depressions may, generally, be a more common and/or bigger concern than wrinkling. Again, fillers can be used in these situations as not only a tool to sculpt features, but to plump up these areas that have lost volume and may be drooping.
An important note on discoloration and growths: Men’s skin is reportedly more susceptible to ultraviolet-induced immunosuppression, which the American Academy of Dermatology notes may contribute to the increased rates of skin cancer among men. In particular, by the age of 60 men have twice the rates of melanoma as women. Males may also have thicker and bigger growths. This underscores the importance of guys doing regular skin checks and seeing our staff at California Skin & Laser for professional exams.
Dr. Bock also trained with the founder of the Mohs Micrographic Surgery technique, which is considered to be the most precise and effective of skin cancer treatments for even those most challenging cases.
