CoolSculpting: Non-Invasive Fat Removal
Although we live in a time of rapid progress in cosmetic procedures and devices, a few advances are truly revolutionary. The development of BOTOX® and the use of fillers as volumizers shifted our understanding of what we could accomplish without surgery or downtime. Now, with the development of CoolSculpting as a device that can remove fat without surgery or downtime, we have made another major step forward.
Stubborn Fat Pockets? Freeze the Fat Away with Cool Sculpting
What if there is a way to grab up that extra unwanted fat on your body and just freeze it away? There is a solution for you, it’s called CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting chills the fat cells, destroying them. Really shocked that it didn’t hurt, it just feels like kind of a very cool massage. Absolutely amazing! I noticed in about 5 weeks and it just kept getting better and better. Something was happening and I knew my clothes were fitting different and my husband noticed and I noticed. But I was even shocked when I saw the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos.
For many years, researchers attempted without success to find a non-invasive, no-downtime way to remove fat safely. There have been a number of devices that have been marketed claiming to do this, but they have failed to produce lasting benefits. Now, with the introduction of CoolSculpting, this goal has been achieved.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital looked at the effect of cold on the skin. They found that by cooling the skin and keeping it at 68 degrees Fahrenheit, some of the fat could be destroyed, while the skin, muscle, and nerves survived. This procedure is called cryolipolysis.
The CoolSculpting device evolved from this research. Like liposuction, it is a spot removal device, rather than a weight reduction device. 20-25% of the fat in the skin is sucked into the applicator handpiece. Results are visible as early as 6 weeks, but, like liposuction, final results are seen in two to four months. Frequently, for optimal results (Treatment to Transformation), more than one treatment in an area is optimal.
The treatment is generally pain-free, although some patients may experience numbness, minor bruising, redness, or discomfort in the treated area, but only temporarily. You can read, use a computer, or talk on the phone while the machine does its work. Furthermore, there is little to no downtime, and most patients are able to resume normal activities the same day. One additional and amazing feature of this treatment is the very high success rate. There are very few non-responders.
CoolSculpting has a 71% “Worth It” rating on realself.com

Liposuction is an invasive procedure that leaves scars and sometimes increases pigmentation around the scars. Occasionally liposuction can be followed by infection and there have been deaths associated with liposuction. CoolSculpting is non-invasive and extremely safe. There are no serious complications associated with CoolSculpting. Liposuction is followed by some down time, while there is none after CoolSculpting. Sometimes there can be dimples in the skin after liposuction while this does not occur after CoolSculpting. There are rare reports of new localized fat growth after CoolSculpting.
