Microdermabrasion is the ideal treatment for people who wish to have their skin rejuvenated without having to go into hiding or curtail their normal activities. As children we all had even, smooth skin. However, with time, sun exposure and ageing our skin becomes coarser in texture, wrinkled and mottled in color. Microdermabrasion, a mild controlled injury to the skin, was initially developed in France (hence the nickname "Parisian Peel") as a unique treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and acne scarring.

In the first generation of microdermabrasion machines, fine sand particles were blown against the skin and then sucked up by the application wand. The newer machines, such as the Diamondtome which we use, use a rotating diamond-coated wand. As the skin ages, the skin turns over more slowly. The diamond particles produce a mild injury to the skin and this makes the skin cells turn over more rapidly. When the skin cells turn over more rapidly, they behave and look as though they are part of younger skin. This regeneration of the skin occurs without visible injury to the skin. Although it takes several treatments for the benefits to be apparent, the net result is skin that appears radiant, soft and regenerated, with a decrease in fine wrinkling and unsightly discolorations. This procedure requires no anesthesia or recovery time, and enables you to continue with your normal daily activities. It is safe and painless, and can improve almost all skin types. The results are relatively short lived, though, and after an initial series of treatments, monthly touch-ups are advised for maintenance of optimal results.
