Pharos Excimer Laser

In keeping with our commitment to having the latest technology available for our patients, California Skin & Laser Center is pleased to announce the availability of the Pharos Excimer Laser, the most advanced excimer laser available. The excimer laser produces a 308nm beam of light which is useful in treating psoriasis, vitiligo and eczema.

The improvement seen in vitiligo patients has been particularly encouraging, because these patients have not had a practical and effective treatment for a disease that can be quite disfiguring. Treatments are given twice weekly for all conditions, and for vitiligo the majority of patients with head, neck, or scalp involvement can see complete repigmentation within four months.

Results were good (but less than 50%) on the extremities and trunk -- but so far, with current treatment regimens, the hands and feet have been slower to respond. An advantage of the Pharos laser is that the beam size can be adjusted to reduce the possibility of the treatment overlapping the uninvolved skin and producing darkening of the skin surrounding the area of vitiligo.

What has been a pleasant and very unexpected surprise is that after treatment has been stopped, the improvement tends to persist. In one study, there was a patient whose results were maintained for 4 years after stopping treatment. Previous treatments for vitiligo produced variable results that tended to fade after treatment was stopped.

Refractory plaques of psoriasis also tend to respond well to the excimer laser. While psoriasis does not stay in remission as long as vitiligo, it has been calculated that the average remission lasts 4 months. This is longer than the remission from any other topical psoriasis treatment and many systemic treatments.

The excimer laser has also been found to be useful in treating patients who have hair loss due to alopecia areata.
